A Perfect Life with God
By the time we reach the end of the Old Testament, one truth has become impossible to ignore.
Humanity cannot save itself.
God had given His people laws, commandments, sacrifices, priests, prophets, judges, kings, and every opportunity to return to Him. Yet the story repeated itself over and over again. The people obeyed for a time, drifted away, suffered the consequences, cried out to God, and were rescued, only to repeat the same cycle.
The problem was never the Law.
The problem was never God's commandments.
The problem was the human heart.
Everything God gave Israel was teaching the same lesson. Religion could not change the heart. Rules could not remove sin. Sacrifices could cover sin for a time, but they could never take it away. Humanity remained separated from God because nothing we could do was capable of making us righteous.
That was the lesson the Old Testament was designed to teach.
Yet while God was exposing humanity's inability to save itself, He was also quietly revealing His plan from the very beginning.
Throughout the Old Testament, He filled history with pictures of the Savior who was to come.
When God judged the world through the flood, He provided Noah with an ark. The ark became a picture of the salvation God Himself would provide. Judgment came upon the world, but God made a way for those who trusted Him to be saved.
When Israel was enslaved in Egypt, God instructed His people to place the blood of the Passover lamb upon their doorposts. Judgment passed over those who were covered by the blood. Long before Jesus was born, God was already showing humanity that salvation would one day come through a sacrifice He Himself would provide.
When God led Israel through the wilderness toward the Promised Land, He was giving us another picture. Just as Israel journeyed through a temporary wilderness toward the land God had prepared, we journey through this temporary world toward the eternal home God has prepared for those who belong to Him.
Again and again, God sent prophets to announce that Someone was coming. Every prophecy, every sacrifice, every feast, every priest, every act of deliverance, and every promise pointed beyond itself.
None of these things were the answer.
They were shadows.
The answer was always Jesus.
The Old Testament was never simply a collection of laws or historical events. It was God's way of preparing humanity to recognize its Savior when He finally came. Every page was pointing forward to Him.
Jesus is the true Ark through whom we escape judgment.
He is the true Passover Lamb whose blood saves us.
He is the true High Priest who brings us to the Father.
He is the greater Moses who leads His people out of bondage.
He is the One who brings us into the true Promised Land—not an earthly country, but eternal life with God.
The Old Testament ends with humanity still waiting.
Waiting for the One who could finally accomplish what no law, sacrifice, prophet, priest, or king ever could.
Waiting for God Himself to come.
