Life Is Empty Without God

If this world is not our home, then it should not surprise us that nothing in it can completely satisfy us.

We were created to live through God, to receive our life, our love, our purpose, and our identity from Him. The moment humanity chose to separate itself from God, it was left with a void that only He could fill.

From that moment on, humanity began searching.

We searched for love, acceptance, happiness, purpose, security, and peace in everything except God. We looked to possessions, success, pleasure, power, relationships, religion, and countless other things, believing that somewhere in this world we would finally find what our hearts longed for.

But we never did.

The reason is simple. This world cannot give what it does not possess.

When humanity rejected God, sin entered the world and corrupted everything it touched. The world itself became broken, and so did every person living in it. We began looking to broken people to heal our brokenness. We expected imperfect people to give us perfect love, perfect acceptance, and perfect peace, yet they were searching for those very same things themselves.

The result was disappointment after disappointment.

King Solomon understood this better than anyone. God blessed him with extraordinary wisdom, wealth, influence, pleasure, and success. If anyone could have found lasting satisfaction in this world, it was Solomon.

Yet after experiencing everything life could offer, he came to one conclusion:

"Vanity of vanities...all is vanity."

Everything "under the sun" was empty apart from God.

Solomon wasn't saying that life has no value. He was saying that life separated from God can never satisfy the human heart because we were never created to live independently from Him.

That same emptiness still exists today.

People spend their lives believing that the next relationship, the next promotion, the next achievement, or the next possession will finally make them whole. Yet once they obtain it, they discover the same emptiness waiting for them.

The problem is not that we desire too much.

The problem is that we are searching in the wrong place.

God created us with a longing that only He can satisfy. Every desire for love, purpose, joy, acceptance, and peace ultimately points back to Him. Until we return to the One who created us, nothing else will ever be enough.

That emptiness is what drove humanity throughout the Old Testament.

Unable to find life in God, people began trying to take life from one another. Instead of loving, they used. Instead of serving, they dominated. Instead of giving, they took. Humanity's search for life became the very thing that filled the world with conflict, suffering, and death.

The Old Testament is the record of that search.

It shows us that life apart from God doesn't lead to freedom. It leads to emptiness. And emptiness eventually produces evil.
